Our LGBTQ Community

Our LGBTQ community is a treasured asset, and we know that our diversity makes us stronger. I have been an advocate for the LGBTQ community for my entire career in public service, and I am so proud of my daughter and her wonderful wife.

As alderman, I voted to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, supported the ordinance that requires LGBT nondiscrimination policies for contractors on city projects, and voted for a resolution urging Congress to repeal “don’t ask don’t tell.”

As mayor, I will strongly oppose so-called “bathroom bills,” push to ban the misguided and dangerous practice known as “conversion therapy” for LGBTQ individuals, and affirm the rights of LGBTQ seniors to access adequate healthcare.

Working together, I know we can make our city more progressive, fair and welcoming for everyone.
